Does music matter anymore? When I was growing up, it did. It mattered a lot. It's tough to put yourself, being 31, because we're all 31-those of us commenting on today's music and wistfully looking back at 1994 as the epicentre of music history-into today's context. There are just a ton of Shitty Shitty bands out there haphazardly put together by record labels, make-up artists, and image manufacturers...BUT, there are bands that matter- some defunct, some that continue to challenge in spite of popular trends, and some that pioneered the popular trends. In the following posts- loosely glossed together over the next while*, I'll post the bands that I think matter to music.

Guess who got a new camera??? yes, after three months of taking shitty pics with my cell phone camera, i decided to make the plunge and buy it. This was taken during the deep freeze from which we are just exiting in calgary now. we had a day of 0 degrees this week, but the rest have all been below 10, reaching a pit of -40 with the wind chill. Needless to say, as we haven't yet entered the tradtional deep freeze months of january and february, this winter is going to be a long, chilly affair.

i was talking with a friend last night over a couple of beers about a number of different things, and he mentioned the Al Gore movie out right now. I haven't seen it yet, though i have every intention of doing so. He was mentioning how upset he was by it, or motivated/worried. And, he's right to be. If you look at the state of the world, there aren't very many places where you can just be and not worry. there is something effed up in every corner. Stephen Hawking said just yesterday that if the human race is going to survive, then we'll have to colonize other planets in distant galaxies. Matthew Good mentioned on his blog something to the effect of if you're unconcerned with the world at this point, then you are ignorant of the facts.

It's just so tempting though, to be ignorant, as they say that's bliss. It just seems so hard when everyone has their own struggles every day to also devote time to everything you worry about. We concluded in our conversation that definitely you have to choose one thing to commit to to try and affect...be it hunger, human rights, the native struggle, global warming, endangered species, animal cruelty, GM foods, etc. otherwise, you'll be truly ineffective, and left feeling helpless. Then you can devote the rest of your time to self-centered activities that make you happy.

ah, the memories are ripe as another hockey season fast-approaches. Peter Mahr's voice will soon be ringing loud in my tv-less house. Of course, i can't go to a flames game anymore, as the season is already sold out, with 14 to 15 thousand season's tickets in advance. anyway, haven't been doing shit-all bloggin of late because i dropped my camera and broke it. as well, i'm genuinely happy with my life right now, and don't have much to complain about...until i preview the news sites and see what is happening in the world. What do people think of the Thai coup that happened lately? What about vietnemese food? salad rolls???dammit, those have to be the best things going. I'm sure that we have more than 400 Vietnemese noodle houses in calgary right now, and new ones opening all the time..quite an insatiable taste for noodles us beef lovers have. ta

Does anyone else think that we have reached a cultural low in this world? How many times do we have to be inundated with stupid pranks, people copying jackass, or just general benevolence as far as the world outside of the city goes before it becomes too much? I'm tired of the norm of decency towards human beings being shifted towards the acceptance of assholes, attention-seekers, and general goofs. I don't feel better watching that crap, and at what point does it become too much? I'm not becoming a centrist leaning right, or anything like that. But, there is a richness in culture available to everyone...ideas...the internet is full of them, as are libararies and people we talk to. We can become more intelligent..rather than dumbed down, as is what appears to be happening. We can only improve society through education and learning, and wanting to learn, striving to learn..not through paint-balling people on the street, or dropping rocks off of bridges onto cars. Bam Margera is a self-centered man who has done nothing to improve or positively affect society.

'officially' started work today, meaning that I got paid for being at the schoo, even though i've been there every day for about a week now. Teaching is one of those strange professions where you put in just about as much time outside of the school, therefore unpaid, as you do while you are there. No overtime to bank up, no bonus cheques...not that i'm complaining...we knew that going in, and plus, we get paid summers and 2 weeks at christmas etc etc, so it's all good. I feel myself getting stuck in a routine again, which is kind of hard to take, but I don't really have a choice. When you're a workhorse, your options and energy become less and less. I am taking spanish courses twice per week starting in sept. , and I want to join a gym, but we'll see. I've been running 5 km every other day, which has really helped..

but, whenever i'm stuck in a place, i start to feel the itch to leave...i think they call that wanderlust. I've been chatting with lots of buddies still overseas...one in japan, 2 in korea, and one buddy doing the europe rounds right now... and i'm pretty jealous. I've been thinking lots of Mongolia for some reason, lately. I'd love to go horsebackriding over there, or mountain biking..seems pretty unchartered. or siberia...both? + Japan????

Anybody following the liberal leadership race? Ignatieff? Brison? I have no idea..i know Ignatieff has as huge career outside the country as a journalist and scholar, and he's obviously smart...but, he was pro-war back in 2003, and that's a huge strike....i want someone good to take out harper...that's all...please???

it seems that during ball tournaments, all rules of society are wiped out...norms, actually laws, and even personal values. Take these two, for example. On any ordinary weekend, not only would they never ride a bike like this, the people of Hanna would never let the ride a bike like this...but, all that changes on slo-pitch weekends.

I thought of a pretty neat side-story for a seinfeld episode the other day..does anyone else do that? anyway, it involves Kramer, and I think it really could have worked.

He phones a random company, let's say the telephone company, and gets put on hold. At first, he's all indignant, of course. But, as time goes bye, and he's still on the line, he hears their playlist of songs, and decides he really likes it.

As the episode goes on, Kramer's struggle is to trying to be put on hold at the company, just so he can hear their play list.

He calls and asks to be put on hold.

When his call is finally answered, he says, in his Kramery way that no, he doesn't need anything, and that he wants to be put on hold again.

Of course, this disrupts the company, as they can't get to as many customers as they would like to (or maybe they're improving service, and answering calls faster). Either way, it's bad for Kramer's playlist desire.

So, he probably uses two lines, his and Jerry's...maybe Newman gets involved.

In the end, they all end up losing their phone service or something.

That could work, could it not?????

time does have a strange way of flying when you are having fun...though it seemed like ana was here for a long time, looking back now, on the day she left, she was here for exactly one month, actually a little less because she arrived in the afternoon and left this morning at 1015, so there you have it...less than a month. but we had tons of fun, a few arguments, and now my place seems much emptier than it was a few hours ago. This time, though we promised to see each other again, it's going to be a long time in between even possibly being able to see one another, so that's scary in itself.

it's the little things that people miss the most, because you can always phone friends and be with someone...but you get used to how a person is, how they touch you, how they breathe, how they look at you...and then suddenly it is gone, and you feel incomplete because those things that were always there have vanished, and can't be replaced by phone calls and email.

nothing puts more self doubt, and ultimately satisfaction, than an arduous trek in the mountains. The first 2 km with your packs full of food and bodies adjusting to the weight are the most difficult...after about 3 days, your body is used to the weight, which has gone down from eating, and you feel like you actually could hike for 2 weeks straight.

We started off our trek at Sunshine Village, and crossed some grizzly bear meadows. On the way to our first destination, Og Lake, we passed several meadows, valleys, and uphill killers. At one point, which was likely about 5 pm, we reached a trailhead. We could go left and reach Porcupine campsite in 1 km, basically straight downhill, or we could move on and try to cover the 9.5 km left to Og Lake. We had already come some 13 km. But, we had our hearts set on Og Lake, and that's where we headed...

Finally, as it was getting dark, we came up over a rise, and there, in this picture above, we caught our first glimpse of the lake.,...friggin awesome, as we had had no water in at least 10 km, and ended up drinking out of a puddle...as well, it was getting dark, and no one wants to hike in Grizzly Country in the dark.

So, yeah, we made it 22.5 km the first day..great feeling at the end...torturous in between.

Well, the ball tournament was everything that it should have been, and everything that I expected. Drunkeness, yelling, and general mayhem ensued, which can only mean good times, and a great cultural experience for ana, cause, yes, in small town alberta, that is culture.

In other news, we're heading out today to go trekking in the mountains for a few days, and then back this weekend to spend it relaxing etc before ana has to go already back to bs. as.

I'm considering moving out of here after 6 months, cause i want a place where I can have a pet, and my landlady is allergic to all things with fur....though she hasn't reacted to me yet, so that's a good sign.

It seems as though the rescue efforts of canadians are going more smoothly now. Canada had the most people out of any country to rescue, and there are likely thousands more to come. We had upwards of 40,000, whereas the states and britain were in the mid-20000.

I had written stephen harper last week to ask him to justify his response to the situation in the middle east, and though he hasn't yet written me back, i did get an email from his staffers...an actual written email..not just general email that would get sent to anyone who writes the prime minister....and they assured me he had read over the email...whether this is true or not remains to be seen.

In regards to my last post, I would like to make something very clear to everyone. I am not a racist or anti-semite. Maybe my word usage was wrong, but my intentions were very clear. I think that it is wrong for one country to bomb another country as Israel has done in Lebanon. The response was too strong, and too many innocent people have been affected.

I am not condoning in any way Hezbollah. I know that they are the ones who sparked this conflict, and have, over the years, inflicted terror upon the state of Israel along its northern borders. I can only imagine what it would be like to live in constant fear of missiles.

But, I cannot be convinced that this bombing of Lebanon was the best plan, and i'm sure i'm not alone. I know that they dropped leaflets telling citizens to leave, giving them advanced warning. However, what if the citizens can't leave, either because the roads are bombed out, they are too poor, or certain family members are immobile? What if they don't want to leave because it is their country, and no persons should have to vacate their houses so another country can potentially bomb them?

I think that, in the end, we would all like to see long term peace in the region, which may mean persuading Syriah and Iran to stop funding Hezbollah. In this respect, let it be heard that I agree with Tony Blair and Condi Rice. But, I don't think that the bombing should continue. It's too big a risk to civilians on both sides...a temporary ceasefire may be the answer, followed by a UN buffer zone along the border to allow the Lebanese government to reign in control of those parts of the country that were lost to Hezbollah.

Well, ana jumped in feet first to my family this weekend as we drove 1000 km to northern sask for a family reunion. we got the whole deal....t shirts, competitions between sides, beer, food, food, lefsa (we're norwegians). It was amazing to meet so many people from my family that I never had before...growing up an only child in alberta, away from my family, i never had a chance to meet many of them, and it was great.

My new car rules. I drove from calgary to an hour outside of saskatoon on a tank of gas. so glad i never got an suv..you're right, screetus.

alright...so, what the fuck is up with Israel????? More important to us, what the fuck is up with Stephen Harper backing Israel? Correct me if i'm wrong, but Hezbollah, Hizbollah, etc. kidnapped two israeli soldiers, and 7 others were killed in the event. So, Israel and its backers, Canada included, say that it's alright if 300 plus lebanese civilians die? that's ridiculous. its inhumane, and I would encourage everyone to write stephen harper and address his stance on this operation. 3 canadians were kidnapped in Venezuela....did we invade venezuela? I know we don't have the history that Israel does with Hezbollah, but this is not the right way out. I have lost all (and it wasn't much to start with) respect for harper over this, as well as the state of Israel. They keep Palestinians in 3rd world conditions, controlling their lives, giving them no options out, exerting force whenever necessary to quell them....it seems ironic that a group, such as the Jews, is capable of such human rights violations. I'm not anti-semetic, but I am in favour of human rights, and I know clearly now that harper and israel are not.

...note that bush is no longer worthy of mentioning in human rights tirades.

holy unupdating guy...well, truth be told, things have been crazy busy here lately. here are some significant events.

1. because my conscience wouldn't let me, i didn't go with anything suv-ish. i bought a new toyota matrix, which is amazing on gas, etc etc.

2. ana is here visiting at the moment and for about 4 more weeks.

3. we went to a wedding in cold lake, alberta this past weekend. debauchery ensued.

4. Kyle Macdonald is now the proud owner of a house in Kipling, Sask.

5. I went to the stampede. paid 12 bucks to get in. could have paid 4.50 for a corndog...didn't.

6. I'll be going to northern saskatchewan in a few days for a family reunion...should be fun times.

7. I got a contract to teach next year, so i no longer have to worry about employment.

and that, in effect, is the awesomeness that is my life. take care, all, and have a great summer

wow, i can't believe how quickly this month has gone bye...unreal. only two and a half days of teaching left, which is crazy. had a whirlwind weekend, starting off with my buddy's stag party on friday night. jagerbomb after jagerbomb later, i managed to pass out at home. the funny part was the next day when i went to pick up my car, and it wasn't there. turns out, we had driven it (the dd) downtown, and I had no idea or recollection. so, it was safely in downtown calgary.

saturday, we decided to go watch and drink at a small town slow pitch tournament near hanna. it was fun, but it's amazing how all these people at the tournament, adopt the redneck persona as soon as they leave the city. some of them are even from vancouver or calgary, or wherever...but, as soon as you're in one of those situations, you either revert to your former self, or morph into a different person. otherwise, you're 'you're a citified faggot'. too funny.

so, yeah, i'm here on beautiful sunday day, waiting to talk to my girlfriend, whom i havn't talked to in a while, feeling unrelaxed and basically gross.

got a sweet flat screen monitor from telus for joining up. 19 inches..not bad.

incidentally, i'm going to be purchasing a car soon....something sporty...these are basically what i've norrowed it down to....

1. dodge caliber
2. mazda tribute
3. hyundai tucson

if anyone knows anything about these cars, that would be great information to get. the caliber is a hatchback, and the other two are semi-suv's. all for under 30,000, which is what i need. so, any info on fuel economy and drive-feel would be great. take care, all.
